Bah. Crappy story. T.T
With Robert's retirement, we were left with just two junior racers on our roster. Both Jacques and Grendel had filled out and matured... kind of.
Naturally, our Derby champion's 4yo debut was the famed GI Santa Anita Handicap, which--with the help of a neon yellow Ling--he won by a length and a half. Grendel, on the otherhand, was started in the GII San Antonio Handicap, which he too won by over a length.
Jacques skipped the Shadwell Metropolitan in favor of the Steven Foster Handicap, which he won. Grendel's second start was the GIII Alysheba Stakes. He won that one as well, but only by a nose. Grendel then went on to secure a win in the GII Tom Fool H while Jacques started in the Man O' War.
Grendel won his race. Jacques didn't finish his.
This time, the neon yellow-sporting BCC trainer wasn't enough to distract our black and white champion as a small flock of pidgeons flew across his line of sight. Like a shot, he was after them. Unfortunately, they were flying away from the grandstands toward the rail.
Jacques, of course, followed.
It was not a pretty sight as the wild racehorse slammed directly into the track rail. Three horses tripped over him. One went in for surgery on a broken cannon bone while the other two made it out with only a few minor injuries. All three survived.
Jacques survived the crash as well with only a hairline fracture in his left fore cannon bone but he was a little traumatized from the experienced. We decided to retire him while he was still technically on top.
In his stead, Grendel moved, taking the Jockey Club Gold Cup with a fierce stride. He went on to place third in the Breeders' Cup Classic before being retired to stud beside his two stablemates.
