Build: As a foal, Jacques looked like a fat little Quarter Horse colt with thick muscles and stubby legs. He has since grown out of that awkward stage and into a fine, elegant stallion. He is well proportioned with a slightly long nose. The only oddity about him is his mane--it never quite... grew out. When the rest of him looks like a prize-winning thoroughbred, that mane sticks up every which way like a foal's.

The year of Jacques's racing debut, we had 3 2-year-olds in training: Dark Robert, Grendel, and Jacques. With Robert's bloodlines, we expected him to be the superstar, our future Derby prospect. When he ended up a racing dud, all eyes turned to Grendel.

The colt took the world by storm his freshman year, only losing 1 race. Jacques showed little such promise.

Their sophomore year, however, changed everything. Jacques still ran all over the place, chasing this thing or that, but we had figured out the key: provide our own distraction, and he'll run straight for it.

Our Derby prospect, Grendel, fell short to Jacques's long, ground-eating stride in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, and then many more races after that up to Jacques's retirement.

Our crazed inspector of a racehorse had transformed like the symbolic caterpillar into a beautiful money-making butterfly.

That still tried to nullify any and all threats he came across.
